After an extensive process, the Northern Star Resources Goldfields Giants have appointed their head coach for season 2018, with former Geraldton Buccaneers head coach Scott Rubbery taking the helm.
Rubery, who beat out a couple of other high profile candidates to secure the role has an extensive coaching background in high level basketball, with official roles dating back to the late 90’s.
After being the assistant coach for the Frankston Blues in the SEABL from 1999-2003, Rubery moved to Geraldton to take on the head coaching role for the Geraldton Buccaneers from 2004 to 2008.
Since then he has coached WA State junior teams, most recently the WA Country Mens U18’s team in 2016.
He also founded the Midwest Basketball Academy in Geraldton, the junior development program used by the Geraldton Basketball Association and was a coach in the National Intensive Training Program (NITP) for many years.
Giants Chairman Jamie Crombie spoke passionately about the appointment.
“We’re excited adding some of the calibre of Scott to our program. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience and a focus on development which we have been heavily focused on.”
“He’s a passionate guy and is willing to stand up for his team when needed, which is a true Goldfields trait that we endear”.
“He’s a true professional on and off the court and we look forward to seeing what he can achieve with our program going forward”
Coach Rubery spoke highly of the club and why he signed on.
“I’ve had the itch to get back into the SBL coaching realms and what a better way to do it than the Giants.”
“They are a proud club with passionate supporters. Regional basketball is a great environment to work in and I’m looking forward to the challenge.”
“They are going to be a young team, but they are keen and willing and I’m looking forward to working towards getting the Giants back into the playoffs”
He wasted no time in starting his coaching duties, travelling to Kalgoorlie from Geraldton this past weekend to take part in the final day of the Men’s SBL and Division 1 Men’s tryouts in Kalgoorlie before his eventual relocation to the Goldfields in late January.
Rubery is set to become the 18th different head coach for the Giants as they head into their 29th SBL season, and in an interesting fact, will be the third with a previous Geraldton link, with outgoing head coach Lou Causer the most recent.
