After an extensive process, the Northern Star Resources Goldfields Giants have appointed their head coach for season 2019, with longtime Giants’ stalwart Wayne Creek taking on the role.
Creek, who edged out three other high level interstate applicants to secure the position, will return to the role he held in the 2010-2011 seasons before having to the leave the region for personal reason midway though the 2011 season.
After leaving the Goldfields, Creek stayed involved in the State Basketball League, taking on an assistant coaching roles at the Kalamunda Eastern Suns and the Stirling Senators before returning the region in late 2016.
He was appointed a Giants assistant coach in 2017 to both the Giants SBL team as well as the newly formed Division 1 team in their inaugural season, before taking on the head coaching role of the Division 1 team in 2018.
Creek was very humble when asked about his appointment to the head coaching role for the upcoming season.
“The chance to take on an increased role in the Giants has been a desire of mine if the opportunity ever arose, so I would like the thank the Giants’ hierarchy for putting their faith in me as they move forward into their 30th season in the league.”
“I feel I can provide the club with some stability and consistency going forward.”
“The club has a bright future with some great young talent being unearthed over the last couple of years. With the return of past players combined with some heavy recruiting that’s already underway, I feel that we can take the next step to bring the Giants back into the playoffs.”
Giants chairman Jamie Crombie reflected Creeks’ words about the appointment.
“After unfortunately not having stability at the head coach position in recent years, we were heavily focused on this during our search for our new head coach.”
“The pleasing thing is that our applicants fitted this criteria and we were extremely lucky to have received such interest from great applicants for the role. I’d like to personally thank them all for taking the time to show us their visions as we went through the process.”
“With Creeky’s appointment, we’re excited adding someone of the his experience to lead our program. He’s passionate about the club, brings a wealth of knowledge and experience and and knows what’s expected by the Giants’ great fan base. We look forward to seeing what he can achieve with our program going forward”
Creek, who has nearly 400 games under his belt as a player and coach since starting his career with the Giants in 1991 was part of the clubs’ inaugural SBL championship in 2007 and was named to the Giants All-Time team in 2009 as part of their 20th Anniversary celebrations.
He is set to become the 22nd head coach for the Giants and 5th in a return situation as the club heads into their 30th season in the State Basketball League.
