Malek returns for second season

Fresh off the announcement of the re-signing of SBL head coach Wayne Creek, the Northern Star Resources Goldfields Giants are excited to announce the return of fan favourite Manylok “Mayo” Malek for the upcoming 2020 season.

Malek, who joined the club after a few seasons playing for the Toowoomba Mountaineers in the Queensland Basketball League, started all 28 games for the Giants had a career season, averaging 14.1 points at 58% from the field, along with 9.2 rebounds and a league leading 2.3 blocks per game in just
28 minutes of play.

His progression throughout the season saw him register season highs of 26 points, 18 rebounds and 5 blocks as he bolstered the Giants interior defence and provided the club their first legitimate shot blocking presence in many seasons.

“Mayo was a priority signing for us going into 2020”, Giants’ head coach Wayne Creek said.

“He did a great job anchoring our interior defence last season, rebounding and blocking shots”.

“He’s also a well liked player on and off the court and has become a leader within the team.”
“I’m very happy to have him back to build from this past season.”

Malek has stayed in the Goldfields since the end of the Giants’ season, playing for Piccadilly Saints in the local KBBA domestic competition, who are currently sitting equal first in the Division 1 Men’s competition, whilst averaging 22 points per game.
